    I always thought the people making the ads adjusted the levels, or it was to do with dynamic range and other techy things... in some way it was louder audibly without being louder in the technical sense, rather than them adjusting the volume knob for ads.

    Can anyone who knows about audio or TV comment on this?

      Yep. I recall a thread about this. Whatever technical argument they hide behind, I don't want to try to explain this to neighbours when I'm watching a late night film.
