At 11:00 the true cold front (as seen on precipiton radar) is positioned North Wales, Stoke-on-trent, Lincoln. Air ahead of the front is @6C but behind it drops to @ 1-2C. Quite a thermal gradient!

The air behind the front is dry with dew points dropping below 0c. However the front is not a sharp line and it may well take 2-4 hours for the wet bulb temprature to fall below zero (required for snow to fall at ground level)

Right now Newcastle, Spadeadam, Carlisle are reporting snow (Wet Bulb temprature is below zero)

Blizzard here in Luton, 20 ft snow drift, house practically buried. Not long before the air runs out.

Was sleeting at 7am and rained/sleeted/snowed on and off this morning, but it's melting fast due to the rain and the warm air. Will have to wait and see.

wxman, how long in advance was this known about? It seems about a week which is pretty impressive.
Is the current pressure system particularly predictable?

BTW, Mrs. d000hg brought home a sledge from Tesco after looking for one for ages. I won't have to pop round your shop after all.

                12:30

Cold front now positioned mid wales, Worcester than curves a tad north to Peterborugh. given the 2-4 hours required for things to chill down (wet bulb temprature) Leeds airport is now reporting snow.

Interesting that North Ireland is NOT reporting snow - it seems that the cold front is now not as sharp as expected (low risk now thunder snow)

Raining and warm at the moment, but heavy snow predicted for 6pm according to the BBC. I'll believe it when I see it.
