Or maybe most of them thought our participation in Afghanistan might be over by now, and that some other more important conflagration may have threatened our nation, and they wanted to be in place should that eventuality happen?
Not sure that even nowadays recruits get issued with crystal balls.

My mate at the rugby club's just glad to have his balls, never mind crystal. He'd like a pair of functioning eyeballs though.

Yes! Of course! How could have I been so stupid and naive! It must come as a total surprise to those joining front-line military infantry units; that after 10 years of war, and expectations being set by the politicians, military, and expert commentators that it is going to be a long slog; that they - gasp - get sent to fight in a front-line combat role.

How could the politicians, military, and expert commentators have not told them the truth of the situation ..... Jeeze ..

True they have made the choice to join up while the war is ongoing but who knows how long it will or won't go on for.

Whats the alternative? For there to be no new recruits and therefore in the future no Armed Forces?

I´ve asked a similar question, to no avail.

Well it is not the front line combat troops that are complaining is it? It is shiny arse deskjockeys shimfing about their taxes.
Besides, the two world wars between them did not last 10 years, so why would anyone imagine that our involvement in a relatively minor deployment in Afghanistan might?
You need to calm down before your exasperation loosens the raisin that you are using for a brain.

Ohh, you are really driven by irrational, and unrequented, unhealthy hate, aren't you? You need to calm down a bit. It's not good for you.
