True, but correct me if I'm wrong here, after 9 years it's fair to say the vast majority of the troops being killed or injured in Afghanistan are people who volunteered to join up whilst this war was being waged, and so effectively have made the choice to go to war, and have made the choice to go fight in this war in particular.

Or maybe most of them thought our participation in Afghanistan might be over by now, and that some other more important conflagration may have threatened our nation, and they wanted to be in place should that eventuality happen?

It must come as a total surprise to those joining front-line military infantry units; that after 10 years of war, and expectations being set by the politicians, military, and expert commentators that it is going to be a long slog; that they - gasp - get sent to fight in a front-line combat role.

True they have made the choice to join up while the war is ongoing but who knows how long it will or won't go on for.

Whats the alternative? For there to be no new recruits and therefore in the future no Armed Forces?

Besides, the two world wars between them did not last 10 years, so why would anyone imagine that our involvement in a relatively minor deployment in Afghanistan might?
