Everyone will hike their charges, so there'll be no comparative change from what it was yesterday.Originally posted by Zippy View PostAnd Captain Poor is right. You'll need to have a rich daddy to get in to Oxford or Cambridge now.Comment

Cameron quote from the BBC
Asked about the fees rise, which he said the coalition preferred to call "student contributions", he said it would do two things.
"First of all it will make sure that our universities are well funded and well supported, because our universities have to compete with universities in China and India and America.
"But the second thing those additional fees will actually mean, I think, is that we won't go on increasing so fast the fees on overseas students, because in the past we have been pushing up the fees on overseas students and using that as a way of keeping them down on our domestic students.
"So we have done the difficult thing in our government which is to put up the contributions from British students. Yes foreign students will still pay a significant amount of money, but we should be able to keep that growth under control."Guy Fawkes - "The last man to enter Parliament with honourable intentions."Comment

Don't be daft. You know what I meant.Originally posted by AtW View PostAnd previously only the poor had access to Oxbridge?
But Oxbridge (and others) will - as a matter of course - charge the maximum. Those at the lower end of the market will pay comparatively more for a degree that won't bring them the financial rewards they'll need to pay off the debt.Originally posted by Doggy Styles View PostEveryone will hike their charges, so there'll be no comparative change from what it was yesterday.

And why not if anybody with Oxbridge degree gets higher salaries, respect etc??!?!Originally posted by Zippy View PostBut Oxbridge (and others) will - as a matter of course - charge the maximum
Ten years ago I applied for an MBA course as Harvard and Stanford - I got rejected in both, but the last thing I cared was to how to pay for them (£30k over 2 years I think), they never asked any questions of that kind because anybody who gets accepted to such a top place would get loan/credit/etc.
The real issue is not whether the poor won't have access to Oxbridge - it's far more people who want to go to lower tier places that's the issue and they are the real cost - Govt could have given 100% free study for those who are good enough to study at Oxbridge, but they can't do it for whole country.Comment

This may surprise you - I agree. Too many kids have been sold the idea of a university education and they ain't all up to it. They think they are though so the lower end of the market preys on them. I preferred the old system where those who couldn't pay got a grant. There were fewer students who qualified of course, but the rest could go and do well respected courses and get decent jobs. It seems to me that opening up higher education to all has actually resulted in the less able somehow 'expecting' a degree, and this has cheapened the qualification.Originally posted by AtW View PostThe real issue is not whether the poor won't have access to Oxbridge - it's far more people who want to go to lower tier places that's the issue and they are the real cost - Govt could have given 100% free study for those who are good enough to study at Oxbridge, but they can't do it for whole country.
I'm probably not putting this very well but it was - and should be - a difficult, fun and drunken experience.+50 Xeno Geek Points
