We stopped using torture centuries ago not just because it is cruel, but because it does not work.

For a recent example, the evidence for WMDs also came from torture (follow the links from the original story). That is, the whole basis for the war against Iraq was based on false information given under torture.

Torture is an unreliable tool. The USA does not yet know that as it is too young a nation to 'remember' that knowledge from medieval times, so it has to make the mistake for itself.
