Still, when i turn on my 5 yr old lappy, despite giving me a windows desktop quite soon it takes ages to interact properly and fire up firefox

So obvious Kandehar. Not at all. Any thought that comes into my head has to be stalled. PCs were faster in 1992 with 286s. Intel giveth, microsoft taketh away.

Then you can start up your PC really fast, and think "oh, if only there were some decent applications".

Yup, upgrading your internet connection will not help. I would think of an analogy but can't be arsed. How much memory has your laptop got in it? Any less than 2GB is not enough IMO.

Yeah i know that. problem is i have a lot of vendor sw installed badly on it. and i need it to blag on client sites.

if i could do an easy disk copy onto a new lappy w/o moving the problems onto the lappy i would, but i dont think i can.

so i live with the pain, and some pleasure

My laptop is similar. It pretends to have booted up, but takes 20 minutes before it is fully operational. It is a cheap laptop though.

Like what? Firefox, OpenOffice, Gimp all better than the windows alternatives and the bonus is it runs faster and never crashes, unlike Windows and its BSOD's
