What part of "unnecessary and gratuitous" don't you understand?
FWIW I only buy free range meat. It tastes much better for a start, so its a win-win.

      er... no
They do it cause it's fun

My cat will catch something (usually mice) and then carry it in his mouth to the front lawn and then proceed to play with it.
At any point he could kill the poor thing by simply squeezing his jaws closed a bit more.

I think you may mean sustenance?

I believe we did have a thread on battery farming, too. I simply cannot be arsed to find and link to it.

I think most of us would agree that battery farming is abhorrent, and luckily, most of us are also hopefully in a position, if meat eaters, to afford to buy meat that has been farmed more responsibly.

          If we choose to.

And then not to bleat (pardon the pun) on about it.

              You're too kind

I haven't actually "come out" with anything. I asked Craphead a question. It's not my fault if he's gone off on a foul mouthed rant.

My own point of view lies somewhere between MP & d000hgs i.e. I think it's good to teach children that it's wrong to torture animals, and wrong to cause animals suffering in the name of entertainment, but I don't have a very good argument as to why it's wrong, and I don't think that killing people is an appropriate punishment.

I believe that the reason cats 'play' with prey goes back to killing for food type instincts.

I don't think anyone was advocating that. It's just that if the animal sometimes gets its own back on the morons who've gone to see it suffer, some of us feel justice has been served.

                    That's a bit worrying.

I think the "playing" aspect is similar to the reason children play, i.e. to learn and practice things.

When I was younger I lived in a house with a cat and a kitten and the cat would often bring small rabbits and things home for the kitten to "play" with (i.e. learn to chase and kill)
