With ten's of thousands taking the exam in any one year, it's statistically unlikely to have a year of exceptionally brighter people.

That statement is incorrect.
If the underlying population is changing for some reason (e.g. immigration, improved teaching, the Flynn effect) the mean intelligence of the sample that is A-level students may change from year to year.
Not saying it does, just saying your reasoning is incorrect.
Actually those who studied well, especially maths, physics etc were guaranteed cushy jobs in military industrial complex, those who did not study well would have to contend with being plumbers...

Well I got As at A-level in Maths and Physics (in the mid 80s before exams became easy) and I've got a cushy job in the financial-industrial-military complex.
