Its an interesting question actually. For a lad/man, is it better to take a beating or to live with the regret for the rest of your life

I mean , OP , would you have felt better if had lost a tooth and got a busted lip as well as losing his wallet.

These days anything could've happened. He was most probably a target because he was pissed.

No. It's because of his age.

18-25 is the worst for violence against the person. As you get older it doesn't tend to happen

WHS especially in London. Discretion is the better part of valour, unless you're sure the scrote(s) is/are unarmed.
          Hard Brexit now!

                Yes.

I was mugged once in London. It wasn't nice because they couldn't have been any more than sixteen years old but the ring leader was bigger than me and pulled a knife.

In retrospect it was a bonus that all he demanded was my phone and not my wallet although I was dressed in casual mode rather than work mode so he might not have thought it would be worth it.

You get over it after a while, I hadn't given it any thought for at least a couple of years until I read this thread.

My hubby got mugged at gunpoint when we lived in the States (a true USA experience!). He gave over his wallet without argument but was miffed when the mugger also took the icecream he'd just been to the shop to buy! The police's response was to tell him to buy a gun...

Seriously though he did get upset afterwards and wonder whether he should have done something different. But he got over it, as I'm sure your son will. Imagine how much worse it could have been if he had objected.

He who runs away lives to run away another day.

I'm not sure what I'd do in that situation. I once had a guy approach me in a dark street asking for money to fill up his car. I asked to see his car keys, which he seemed a little pissed off about. Anyway I gave him a pound and he was on his way. I wondered later whether he'd been sizing me up. Had I thought it was a mugging, and I didn't at the time, he'd have had to work for his money.

I don't know how I'd react if there were more than one and/or if weapons were involved. There's always running away I suppose. But unless he were of Africa/carribean origin, I'd likely thump a single unarmed attacker. I'd think twice about tackling a member of the aforementioned ethnic group though, because I've seen the result of too many boxing matches. Never bet on the white man.
