It is my sister and I that do the book-keeping and payroll in and I have been struggling for a while with payroll software. Ridiculous as we are now specialists in software. I feel unqualified to use it in the sense that when something doesn't add up then I don't know where it has gone wrong. Holiday pay is one area where we have struggled to keep up and employees have complained about mistakes.

your current issues with the payroll seem to stem from your unfamiliarity with the usage of the software. Surely, you must be able to give a call to the vendor (assuming they are still in business), asking to send someone for a detailed explanation/demo of the features of their product..You can hold the vendor rep with you, until you are reasonably confident with the usage of this product..Might have to pay for this though, depending on the terms of the license and support (if you have any).
