Perhaps a United Kingdom football team would be a good idea.

Possibly the worst idea imagineable.

For a start, that would obliterate, at a stroke, the four oldest international football teams in history.

And despite the failings of the current crop of English players, they would still form nearly all of a UK side, perhaps all of it. They qualified for this world cup quite comfortably, whereas the other UK teams were never even in with a shout.

A combined UK team would be the end on the line for virtually all aspiring internationals from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

That will mean the Yanks topping the Group and England going through as runners-up.

I also predict that the Hun will win their Group and, rather predictably, will knock England out in the next round.
At that point, all the English patriots that have been exhorting those of us from the other countries of the United Kingdom to throw our support behind the English Footy team, can turn their attentions to backing the last Brit at Wimbledon.
I mean it is only fair. In the World Cup, England have been quite singularly attempting to enhance simply their own national position, and not that of the UK as a whole. Yet still the entreaties poured in, suggesting it was some sort of national duty.
Oor Andy is clearly representing GB as a whole as he attempts to bring the title home. How could anyone consider NOT backing him?
Or shall I dust off the hypocrisy watering can and give the recalcitrants a good soaking?
