Network. Involvement in startups is usually who you know.

Think like them, if you were going to start-up where would you go? what network events would you attend? What forums would you be on?

Best gigs I did were the ones where it was only me working on them. The problem with most projects is all the other people working on them. Bad enough having to cope with clients who insist on saying what they want done, they should be grateful for whatever I give them.
