To put this in to perspective better than anticipated tax revenues cut the deficit by 5.5 billion last week - UK budget deficit far smaller than expected | Business | The Guardian.

I still think it's good practice to do some pruning of the public sector but it's just fiddling about with a paddling pool waiting for the tide to come in.

I woke up to the news on the radio that they would all be losing first class travel, that made my day.

Increasing tax revenues as the economy recovers.

The danger of cutting too much is that you stall the recovery and actually make things worse.

I suppose the trick is too cut just enough to save money/stop the public sector crowding out the private/achieve private sector style efficiency gains by cutting out dead wood.

£6 billion is about the interest we pay on the deficit (never mind on the debt) isn't it? (£160 billion * 4%). Doomed.

The +50 Billion in cuts come next month. It is going to hurt and hurt a LOT.

Sadly, the weakest will suffer the most when the start with the benefit cuts. Just how they are going to get the 8 million back to work when there are less than 500,000 notified vacancies I don't know. Some reports hint at having to be in the last six weeks of life to qualify for sickness benefits; the rest are to be deemed to be able to do some sort work. I still haven't heard anything about cutting off the near infinite supply of imported labour either.

Have ConDem said when they expect the deficit to be totally cleared, or reduced to a 'good' level?

So many times in the TV debates Brown kept on about "taking £6bn from the economy" and Dave said "we're not taking it out, we're making a 1% improvement in efficiency".

Does this mean Brown was right?!
