Bristol
I was looking over the shoulder of the girl sat in front of me on today's journey to Swindon and was reminded of the days I used to go up to Bristol for a day's trainspotting. What prompted this memory was what it said on her ticket; it said Bristol Temple Meads. Now, back in the day, a ticket to bristol would say Bristol Group Stations. What this meant was that we could get the train up to Bristol TM, spend a few hours gricing at the end of platform 11 and then get another train out to Bristol Parkway which was about 15 minutes away and back again. What was fun about this was that we'd get wind of what loco was pulling what train and pick and choose our time of departure according to this. Often it would be a peak or a wezzie and if we got really licky we'd get a named loco. What was also exciting was the destinations of these express trains - all going to distant exotic places that we'd could only dream of going to; places like Derby, Nottngham, Crewe. As a footnote, I've never been to Crewe. Odd that, because for a gricer that's like a moslem sayng he's never been to Mecca.Comment

Do you remember the class 205 diesel electric multiple unit "thumpers"? not only was each carriage in the set sealed, you'd also be in a sealed compartment - one door on each side of the carriage and two seats in opposition spanning the whole width of the carriage, no aisle or anything.Originally posted by zeitghost5 coaches again this morning.
And oddly enough, you can't move from the rear 3 to the front 2 coz the door between is locked.
Most odd.
Hot & airless, despite the heating being off.Comment

That was very common on southern region EMU commuting stock back in the 1970s/80s.Originally posted by gricerboy View PostDo you remember the class 205 diesel electric multiple unit "thumpers"? not only was each carriage in the set sealed, you'd also be in a sealed compartment - one door on each side of the carriage and two seats in opposition spanning the whole width of the carriage, no aisle or anything.Comment

Unlike other bog units it had a definite throb; hence the nickname Thumper. Bit like the sound of a hoover or a brush 4.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostWho could forget??

13 minutes late.
Deep joy.
At least they'd been recently refurbished, so the smell wasn't too bad.
