Given that the Catholic adoption agency has adopted the same view and won exemption from the anti-gay discrimination law, I don't think a ban is in order. While most people may disagree with the view, it is not, in and of itself, evidence of bigotry, intolerance or interference in other's lives.

Personally I don't think a ban is in order. Actually I don't think a ban is in order for saying anything, however contentious.

But for the life of me I can't see why intolerance should become acceptable just because it comes from a church.

Although I respect your view, I just thought I'd link this article about two guys who live not too far from me, who have over the years adopted many children that straight people just couldn't cope with. Mentally and physically handicapped kids, drug addicted babies, physically abused kids straight from the hospital after the wounds inflicted by their 'straight' (un)natural parents have been treated.

If all people and agencies were blinkered and judged people by what people did in the privacy of their own bedroom, then kids like these would have been confined to life in a childrens home, denied the chance of a real family through no fault of their own.

That's not the point. The government has deemed that it is acceptable to have exemptions, and it is acceptable to say "Gays should not be allowed to adopt" without breaching gay-hate laws. Though it's usually dressed up as "Only families with a mum and a dad should be allowed to adopt, and no fatties".
