Must have been a good offer for you to accept. If you are off to a competitor of some sort wouldn't your current employer want you out sharpish? Hope it all works out!

Anyway yes am trying to persuade current to let me go. Gardening leave would be nice for 6 months - not likely they'll just pay nme 6 months wonga though.

Yup it's either out asap by agreement or an arrangement called 'gardening leave'
