Understanding German makes absolutely no difference.
Hmm, somehow it makes a difference to me; I find a sort of disjoint in my mind between understanding the spoken words and the written words and that throws me off the humourous content. It’s strange; consciously I can see it’s funny, and I certainly have no silly political objections to taking the piss out of tulipler, but somehow it just doesn’t get me laughing as I’m distracted by the language disparity. I have the same problem watching a TV programme that’s poorly subtitled, as so many are here in NL.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

I can manage to switch off during the ranting bits (probably got an ex-boss to thank for that), but in the straight dialogue I have similar problems.

I have a strategy for avoiding subtitles on telly - watch it sitting at the dining table rather than on the sofa and my eyes focus more easily on the top of the screen. That doesn't work if the dialogue switches to something like Japanese, as then I do want to concentrate on the subtitles.

Cinema is the worst as here the English version will normally have subtitles in German and French, and I try to read both.

Out of synch dubbing drives me so nuts that I'll switch channels.

The subtitles for Top-Gear in Danish often make me laugh. There is an awful lot more down there than what is on the broadcast sound track. The reason is the video arrives at the translators in the raw, without the music etc. so they hear all the stuff that gets edited out, and it ends up in the subtitles.

Must be something wrong with me then? I thought they were freakin hilarious. The Usain Bolt one was first one I saw and I was howling with laughter... Maybe it was just the moment

Yes I saw one of these a while back, I think it was Hitler claiming how great he was at Modern Warfare (the game!).

Found it amusing, but then I am a gamer too.
