I have not got it to work at all.

Initially I was reluctant to admit it because it is 8pm in the evening here and I have had a couple of wines and the technology is not my field of expertise but I am now happy that I have correctly edited my hosts file, I have pinged the IP address I was given and it is not responding.

Sometimes there are more than one hosts files. Worth checking?

Here's a suggestion or two...

Why not permit us to pay a donation to the site in return for disabling adverts on a user by user basis?

You could possibly extend the ignore facility to not display anything at all from those on an ignore list...
