I got my watch from RLT watches (a Swiss movement hand-made by the man himself. Quality but not a brand name).

I asked for advice on the forum, their members are as geeky as we are and will be able to answer the make. model and best place to buy questions.

I'm still considering a Cartier I saw in a pawn-shop at the weekend...

I would say if you are only going to spend up to £500 then get something that looks classic like a Rotary or a Raymond Weil or something contemporary like a Swatch. You won't get a chronograph for that money so just buy something you like rather than what other people think.

If you were going to spend up to 1K I'd suggest geting a Tag, or for 3K get a Breitling. I've got a Breitling B1 that I've had for nearly 10 years, worn every day and it still looks like new and keeps perfect time. Plus I like it a lot.

        25 * 20 quid Rolex rip-offs, all different varieties.

Should last you 10 years or so.

Tisot (electronic) and Oris (mechanical) are good value for money in that range. If you want something different then go for Poljot (mechanical) but make sure you are buying the genuine article. There are many copies on Ebay and the Internet, some copies are so good it very difficult to tell then from the genuine ones.

You could buy a s/h Omega (mechanical). I have mine from new and 35 years latter it still keeps good time and looks like new.

But I thought is the watch going to be any more accurate than a 50 quid watch? I reasoned not and bought a lorus for 50 quid. It tells me the time and day \ date.

Spending 500 quid on a watch is, imo, silly.

My current Fossil watch I have had for about 10 years and cost me £65, plus a couple of batteries over that time.

Ditto but with a Swatch. I still get compliments on how stylish it looks.

If you want something different from the seikos and rotarys go for a Mondaine swiss railway watch. They are a design icon with gorgeous functional faces. Perfect for an everyday wear.
