264 men admitted to UK hospitals so far this year with either an item stuck up their rectum or an injury caused by a vacuum cleaner.

Mate , I pity the mentality in society that goes: "Flying is safe ! " . Tell that the families of the 29 crashed planes this year alone !
The point is the following. Commercialism and marketing are ok as long as it doesn't kill you directly. For example - stay home and watch X Factor and Big Brother all day. You won't die in an instant but the missed opportunity cost of doing something beneficial may be indeed your death. Think if missed exercise. !
However when it comes to flying the situation differs. In front of the tv you have choice - you can decide to exercise. In the plane seat - you have already made your choice. You decided to go with the maxima - Flying is safe. Fack it. Everybody knows it. Even kids can tell you. But in the seat you are not in control. You will be killed by others - be it a moron pilot or a tired one.
The real killers are the owners of Boeing and the other 1 , 2 monopolists. The ones that tell you flying is safe mate , just look how many people die from this or that. FLYING IS SAFE - the NUMBERS SHOW IT.
While you board the plane knowing that flying is safe, aviation company owners , like any company owner, take excess profits and distribute them in dividends which in turn becomes yachts , 10th house on a new beach and another mercedes to the collection.
This is billions which , if democracy and governments actually worked , must have been diverted towards making planes fool and accident proof. By new technology , by integration of full body parachutes , by getting those vastly praised redundant systems to actually work or replacing them with ones that do.Last edited by gooddayall; 10 April 2010, 09:13.Comment

???? Was the OP /before/ this crash?
Polish President and leading government figures killed in air crash in Russia.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8612825.stm
My trust level of Russians is extremely low (another glass of Polonium 210 anyone ?). They were on the way to commemorate the Katyn Massacre, a very hotly disputed issue with the Russians: who have for decades tried to deny/whitewash/scapegoat responsibility.
Is it beyond the realms that FSB types may have had a contribution ? I would dearly hope not.
Horrific.Comment

Russia has more that its share of bad weather. Most incidents are caused pilots taking risks when they should in fact abort take-off or landing.
I think this is the case for the Polish flight.

Update: It was the fifth attempt to land.Last edited by Paddy; 10 April 2010, 09:43."A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices," George OrwellComment

No one claims it's impossible to die in an aeroplane. The point is that flying is usually safer than the alternatives if you need to travel hundreds or thousands of miles.
The statistics can be deceptive as plane journeys are typically longer than car or train journeys and planes are much faster. Hence the deaths per passenger mile make flying appear very safe whereas the deaths per journey or per hour are somewhat less favourable.
Of course because different modes of transport move at different speeds comparing the deaths per hour for identical journies requires you to factor in the different journey times to get a true picture of how safe a particular form of transport is for any given journey.
It also seems likely that the number of deaths per journey would increase for trains and cars if they were used more for long journeys. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment

Yep, he lost it when he tried to string sentences together..."I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."
