The average council tax bill has almost doubled in the past decade, says a report by the Halifax building society.
The rise, from more £550 to almost £1,100, is three times higher than the rate of inflation and twice the increase in average earnings.
The tax is now 91% higher than when Tony Blair first took office.
And that was 2007!Comment

This is due primarily to historical under-investment and the traditional use of sea outfalls. Major improvements and treatment works on all these outfalls were necessary to comply with the EC Bathing Waters Directive. The Government decided that the upgrades in this region should be paid for by the customers of South West Water. This has meant that the vast capital programme to improve water quality at 30% of the designated bathing beaches in England and Wales is met solely by 3% of the population and local industry. Over the next few years major new European Standards are likely to be imposed which could have significant costs to all of us.
The average water and sewerage bill amounts to as much as 9% of the single person's state pension – a greater proportion than anywhere else in England“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun. And the first vessel to have departed is Britain”Comment
