For some people, the dilemma is not between the car and the train, it is between the bicycle and public transport. This map comprehensively shows that if you want to commute to the Department for Transport, and you live anywhere near the centre of London, it’s best to get on a bike if commuting speed is your main concern.
Not a good advert for the DoT is it?

        And those maps are genius.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

You never know could get lucky and find a role within walking distance of the station. So far, that's happened surprisingly often.

When living in London I've still often ended up with a commute between 30 mins and an hour.

As long as I can do door to door in something resembling an hour(ish) and not be a pissed off mess when I arrive then I'll be happy.
If it's like my 15 minute motorbike ride from Clapham to Holborn in a year that saw very little rain I'll be very happy
Yeah, I know what you mean. I lived and worked in London for more than 10 years and the only time I had a regular sub 30 minute commute was when I lived in zone 1 and I could walk to work in 30 minutes. Outside of that, I would consider 45 minutes good going although I doubt I could live with even that now I've got used to Munich.

Ah I'm in Munich now, went to my German lesson this morning at peak commuter time with a bit of a hangover, just missed my Ubahn, waited 4 minutes for the next one, got a seat, blah blah....fooooookin excellent. 52.40 Euro a month!
Was sitting there thinking how utterly miserable this would be in London under same circumstances
Shame the lessons aren't going well!

Gotta a place in Devon (beaches, moors, chilled lifestyle ) and a place in London (work, work, and work, not really ).

                Works very well for me.

Certainly makes up for the workload in the smoke.

As one of the other posters said, Get yourself a permanent place somehwere nice and rent a room where you work, oh joy if they are the same place.
Never has a man been heard to say on his death bed that he wishes he'd spent more time in the office.

I'd rather do 1-2 hours on a train where passengers speak a pleasant language like English, Italian or French instead of 30 minutes on a train where passengers speak German.
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

I find leafy SW London one of the best places to live in the world, let alone the UK

                      - easy commute to work by motorbike or train
                      - loads of great restaurants and pubs - more choice than you'd get in Europe
                      - low crime rate, from my experience anyway
                      - plenty of green open spaces
                      - coast is about an hour away

                      One BIG disadvantage

                      - Only good schools are independent - so when the kids get old enough move to Surrey.
                      Hard Brexit now!
