Where's nice to live in the UK?

The faster/shorter the train journey, the more chance it will be standing room only. It must be the way they design the routes. Woking in Surrey is a great example. Very frequent service and only 20 mins journey time but you'll hardly ever get a seat at peak times.

Do you think you'll be mostly working in London? With potentially so much work on your doorstep in the Berkshire/Hampshire area you may never set foot in the station! On the other hand if you think you'll mostly be working in London then I'd seriously consider living in London...but whereabouts to buy in London is a whole new subject

      Security Cleared?

Another thing worth mentioning is security clearance. Yes, that old chestnut! If you have it (or can get it) you will find a large concentration of SC contracts in the hampshire area. With SC the only train you may have to worry about is the one made of gravy!

Great shout on the security clearance. Another tick for the M3. I don't have SC though I did a few list X projects for MoD / BAe at IBM and had it then for 3 or 4 years.

One day someone will wake up and start pre-clearing people.

Wish I had some contacts in a small company that could bung me a little bit of work to get the damn SC on back my CV. If I'd known then what I know now I probably would have tried not to let it lapse.

30 mins standing 3 or 4 mornings a week for half the year isn't the end of the world. I could be lucky and go two years without having to set foot in the capital....whooooooooo knoooooooows

In terms of having the highest property prices in the country, I would say London is most directly comparable with Munich, and Munich is definitely cheaper than the parts of London I would choose to live in.
While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'

Hertfordshire is very commutable to the city but the property prices in the well connected towns & nearby villages e.g. St Albans, tend to reflect that.

Yep but Munich has pretty much perfect public transport and practically no crime. The girls are also slim and the lager tastes great. It also has a large town feel to it rather than sprawled out city. They don't really compare in my book.

P.S. Munich property surprisingly expensive though what with the Euro they way it is and all. I know.......I've been looking.

Yep, heard nice things about St Albans but as you say, prices perhaps a bit too high and commute inevitable rather than (I hope) 50/50 somewhere along M4 & M3 commuter belt.

I dare another suggestion. How about Ashford?
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Yup Ashford came up...that high speed train's not cheap though.
Looks like a nice part of the world.
As with many other commuter spots though, the commute would be almost inevitable for the lack of local possibilities.

                    Ta though

I'm reliably informed by the wife that it is not.
