If people want to travel 50 million miles to the moon to buy something that they can get from the local corner shop why shouldnt they be allowed to do so?

If they want to do that, then it's fine, however they should not need to.

If booze/smokes were available in UK supermarkets with the same level of duty as in France, then 90% of such booze trips to France would go away. That's because they are an economic anomaly created by artificially high tax limits.

And if people still want to go to France to buy booze then it's fine by me - they SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THAT though.

Atw, you have an incredible faith in politicians. You think that if tax rates were harmonized across the EU then taxes would go down. They wouldn’t. All taxes would rise to the highest level in the EU. So you’d be paying Danish booze prices, British tobacco prices, Dutch car taxes, French income taxes, British fuel prices etc. Why? Because governments could then get away with it.

It is not a question of need it is a question of choice. Your idea to have standard VAT rates removes choice and empowers the wrong people (governments).
