Rightly or wrongly it's the design of the train. They can't just take a couple out and plug in a couple of second class carriages.

Solved that one for you; rightly.

Step 1: fire anyone even remotely involved in creating specification for such a train, approving it, ordering it etc.

Step 2: reward anyone who finds a solution to this problem that does not involve having 4 empty 1st class carriages.

My solution: reduce price of peak travel in general to fill up trains in that time, and specifically 1st class - use dymanic demand driven pricing like Ryanair/Easyjet.

Alternatively, stop whining and buy a first class ticket.

My company can't afford to waste shareholders money like this: I go off peak, standard class only and even that costs effing £45

Last week I was running a conference with maybe 6 or 7 major logistics customers.

Every one, every single one had looked at using rail over roads. Of these every single one had just not been able to make it cost effective.

Then they wonder why nobody uses the rails to move goods around.

And you come on here and complain when people do not take up offers to work for you?

And you expect us to offer 1st class train / air travel to employees and contractor?

The boss (me) travels standard class and chooses off peak period to reduce cost to the business, that's the right attitude that I'd expect all SKA employees to follow at the time of the worst recession since God knows when.

Bad choice. If you turn up to business meetings smelling of pleb you'll never get the big deal.
