Americans aren't strictly 1st world. Most of them exist on food vouchers and don't have proper health care.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Did any of them have to renounce their original nationality?

        Probably not.

If you live in England long enough to get citizenship then getting it is a no-brainer.

I know two kiwis who stayed long enough to get UK citizenship, one of them went through a sham marriage to get it too. They are both permanently back in New Zealand now.

Didn't think the yanks recognised dual citizenship
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Yes that must mean they're all flocking here.
Outside of the City and its salaries there's precious little to attract anyone here: not the weather, not the rail service, road system, NHS, size of houses or economy.
And its not going to get better, the cake is too small to support a population of £65 million +

Indeed why not have the ability to work in Europe as an insurance policy as all it takes is filling in a few forms.

I'll ask her next time I see her. What she did say is that she had two passports. So it may be different. Anyway, she said she wanted to become a British citizen.

German's going bankrupt??? as in the country? ummm I'd say there's more chance of Britain admitting their bankrupt (they already are) than Germany going bankrupt.. IMO

Not wishing to presume anything threaded says, but he may mean individual Germans rather than the country. Here is something from AccountacyAge.
