Why does every new bit of house price/global warming/recession news need its own thread?

Indeed. The vast majority of so-called news links posted on here are either the same old maundering about a statistically-insignificant 0.01% shift in some metric, or deranged ramblings from an imbecile holed up in a bunker in Colorado with 14,000 assault weapons and a blog.

Result is that the whole board only goes back a few months, and if you try and search for something useful that was posted longer ago than that, it won't be there.

You can change that in your preferences:

1. Hit the "User CP" link at the bottom of the box containing the breadcrumb links at the top of the page;
2. Hit the "Edit Options" link in the left-hand column;
3. Scroll down to the "Thread Display Options" section;
4. In the "Default Thread Age Cut Off" (sic) fieldset at the bottom of that section, change the value from "Use Forum Default" to "Show all threads" (props to the vBulletin folk for ignoring the concept of using consistent capitalisation in a UI);
5. Scroll down and hit the "Save Changes" button.

You will then have all 1,781 pages (at time of writing) of General at your fingertips, although it seems a little odd that a number of the earliest posts appear to have no replies

I've returned recently having only posted a little in the last few years. Mordac gave up years ago, his excuse was that it was a shadow of it's former self.

On a quick scan of the last 300 or so threads started. Less than 10% are contractor/IT related. It appears of those, I started about 20%.

The site has become bloated on soft porn & silly word games. There is no need for moderation, because nobody cares and is offended. Any sensible question, never gets an answer.

What's interesting is, we seem to have an older selection of contractors according to a recent poll. But I don't see any newbie asking questions and getting meaningful answers. Whats the point? You may as just ask about what you had for lunch!

Huge amount of experience here, but the site offers no value or no imagination, and to be honest, if I owned it, I wouldnt bother because there is no commercial value in having all of these users/logins and porn links.

Really, is this the way you want to see this site go? Contracting is more complex and cut throat than ever! Do we really have nothing to offer?

Cut the chaff I say and decide on what this site stands for, because otherwise it has no value.

I think this board is no different to any other. After time, communities develop and like real-life communities, people come, people go, people take some comfort from being around familiar faces (posters).

Without this board, would so many of the BN66 guys have found each other in a time of crisis? What about when agencies go under? How many times have people used this for contacts (I bet half the 'real' contracting stuff is dealt with via Private Messaging) or even found contracts? Dodgy might wave his Maggiebanner a lot, but I bet his inbox is one of the busiest here - especially after his offer to help guys with CV revamps.

How many times do we get asked the same question despite an identical question being asked just a few posts underneath ? Is that how you'd want to see the forum, just helping 'HAI GUIZ IM NEW, WOT DO I DO TO FIND A CONTRACT!?!?! posters? Or maybe we should just post all our knowledge here so it can be used as a free resource for every Knowledge Migrant who hasn't got a clue to deal with non-text-book issues but is undermining our businesses and the contract market regardless?

If coming here makes you so angry or depressed MF, maybe this is the wrong place to find therapy.

Yes, CUK, as a whole, is about contracting.

The General forum, on the whole, isn't. As you noticed and contibruted MF. Hippos and vans and paranoid schizophrenia aren't offically within the contractor's remit but we happily replied to your posts...

I spend a lot of my time in the other forums where serious questions are given serious answers, often by the same people who post tulips here. Also there are others who never bother with General.

I suggest that's what you do if you're so unhappy with it.

Forums are moulded by the people who use them, not by the people who don't...
