The amount of people travelling on a particular train is pretty constant, so if 1200 chose to travel on the 11:32 seating 1150 comfortably would mean that the 50 would not buy a premium ticket to be crushed in 1st class.

Meaning your revenue would go down

FFS dude, make first class 25-30% more than current standard class - you'd fill up those carriages and it would still be much better for just 25-30% extra.

what would I be getting for the extra premium? the experience would be the same as travelling 2nd class

Bigger seats, less people in the carriage due to less seats in it: well worth 25-30% premium.

Used to on the old slam door trains - now-a-days 1st class is just a continuation of the same carriage (on my network) so not worthwhile - when I travelled to Norwich 4 years ago was the last time I used a long distance train and bought 1st class- reasons are:

                Less people
Less idiots who have to vebalise their most inane thoughts down a mobile
Less idiots who fail to grasp the principle of amplification and that you don't have to shout down a mobile a-la two tin cans and a bit of string
Less female 'he said she said' type conversations
                did I mention less people?

FFS If you book in advance first class is only a little more expensive, and that's what it's worth, a little more. On the (virgin) west coast mainline anyway (which he would have used).

The only downside to 2nd class is the occassional Rab C Nesbitt.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Excellent. I support the return of Pullman carriages as a sort of ‘extra-uber-first-class’ and the reintroduction of fine restaurant cars on all train journeys of more than 1 hour. Put the style back into rail travel.
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014
