Too bloody right. I am not embarrased to admit this. 2 to 3 hours lost not being able to work while sitting with the plebs costs money so it's a valid expense in my book. I would, however, have to say I would expect them to work at maximising savings on tickets rather than just booking to most expensive one becuase they can. I find it harder to book a full price ticket than I do to get a discounted on.

And tbh he is right about the class of people, get some right scroats in 2nd. One bad trip down in 2nd, no work done, meeting waste of time, budget isn't secured, has to do it all over again... Lots of money wasted.

And I wonder how long some ***** would secretly photograph his laptop screen over his shoulder and sell it to the paper and there would be another outcry over MP's flashing secret docs etc etc...

You think that wouldn't happen in first class?

Haha! Well yes but because we are a better class of people we would feel it beneath us to engage in such frivolous activities. An evening spent chatting over a good cigar and brandy at the respected old boys club away from the humdrum of the public hovels can furnish the same information heavy weight bonded parchment with the ink still wet I do believe.

Tbh the quality of people in first class on a train isn't really that different. I'm still there! Where you really notice the difference is on a long haul flights, like to aus, where I was surrounded by tv people and other such w**kers... the experience, though, is much better.

I sympathise with the old fool but he's wrong.

Just because lazy good for nothing councillors rob the public blind for things like 1st class travel is no excuse. Besides, councillors aren't just beneath MPs ... they're beneath pond life.

If the general public think they're infuriated by MP expenses, they should take the lid off & have a gander at local authority expenses.

Perhaps what's needed is a Third class?

MP's should travel 1st class but he's a bit of a twat regardless of that issue.

I travel 1st class for work, primarily to get a seat. I don't work on the train, but I do want to be ready for work and relatively stress free when I get there.

You get some throbbers in 1st class too, usually until the guard kicks them out because they're travelling on a standard class ticket. Speaking of throbbers, bloke on the table next to me once got kicked out to make way for Jack Straw and his security...

Few of us mind this old fool, you, me or whoever, travelling 1st class if they choose to for whatever reason.

                    That's not the issue.

I doubt your client, or anyone else's employer will pay for the 2nd class ticket let alone 1st class.

Let the honourable dears pay for their own travelling to & from work. Focus their minds a bit more on public transport.

And to make them feel better about it, first order of the day after they arrive at HoC, is to debate how best to expose local authority expenses to full public scrutiny ... council by council, officer by officer.

Doing so might even solve the public deficit in one fail swoop !

Must admit I was put off travelling 1st on the east coast line not because of the price but by those who use it.

mainly civil servant types and squeaky blonde gal <new money, who insisted everyone in the train could share in here phone conversations>

It's the civil servant types though the get up my nose, passing a condescending look every time they glance my direction. Making out they are the most important thing since craft cheese. Gosh talk about the wrong stuff.
