I'm currently benched and I turned down a crappy rate the other day.

It's partly self respect and partly about feeling exploited, I'm damned if I'll take a lousy rate since my war chest is healthy and the location was pretty awful anyway.

      Rates

Its not just rates before agreeing to anything always check the terms and conditions under which the agent operates. There are some enlightening changes coming up. I recently have rejected 2 jobs because the terms stitched you up. I out it doen to the fact most agencies are member of (cr)APSCo.Even extensions are now hiding naughty little nuggets in them and the agents attitude is take it or leave it. If you leave you'll not be working with us again.
What we need are agents who know what they're talking about. I often get calls from agents who obviously have never read my cv. i get the impression they're just sweet young things, or spikey haired suits. After all xeroids moved from copiers to office systems then to double glazing then to estate agents then to financial advisors, then to banks each time they move they get more money and do even more damage. Perhaps our time has come or is this too righ wing for our present culture?

Agent on the phone this morning said ‘I see you have a few years Oracle and SQL Server DBA experience; can you write SQL queries?’

Another ugly practice I'm seeing now is agents who want the payment terms to be just as long as their client's payment terms; sometimes even 90 days. Now I know that if I worked direct I'd have to accept this, but what's the f**king point of the agent if I have to wait that long for the money?
And what exactly is wrong with an "ad hominem" argument? Dodgy Agent, 16-5-2014

I hope so. Then perhaps Billy* won't find it quite so easy to jump the queue.

As a matter of interest, how does the number of agencies compare between now and then (20 years ago)?

How did we get into the position where the finding of our livelihood is dependent on people like that, and then we give one day's work every week to them?

I told a pimp the other day that it wasn't worth my while to apply for the role at that rate. Felt good

He tried selling it as "it's only a 4 week rolling contract so there's plenty of chance to find something else..." but I told him that no matter how short it was, if it wasn't worth my while, it's not worth my while.

Yup, much the same here, I've now had 4 seperate pimps call me about the same role in Swansea, I've told them all the same that since Swansea is a damn long way away (better part of 275 miles) and the rate is half what I'd consider that there's no way I'd think about being put forwards for it.

Dunno to be honest, quite possibly, that or a company related to aircraft manufacture.

I didn't ask, as soon as the rate was mentioned I told them to bugger off...

All the pimp told me was "south Wales" - he then guessed at Cardiff until I told him that it was more likely to be Newport.

Still - at that rate, unless it was in my study, I wasn't interested in the slightest.

I've had 5 1/2 months at home not working now, and could do with getting out of the house - but not at that price.
