The OP reminds me of that Cypher guy at the end of the Matrix who knew his steak wasn't real. Take the perm role but if you don't see many people over 55 in the office, start working on Plan B. Good luck.

i guess theoretically, after the foundation three m's there could be all sorts of kinds of m's, and philosophically one could assume that as a rule of thumb, the more m's a man has to his name, the less chance he has of materialistic financial dreams

        Milan.
Well MB spot on. Wish I'd known about the neutering abilities of the 3 M's.

Had a chance to move to San Fran, M number 1 didnt want to know, made all the noises. I was given an ultimatum move or leave. So I left. My life long dream shattered.

M number 2, well yeah, but you can rent it out can't you??? Oh no, not if M number 1 doesnt want you to.

M number 3. Jesus. Can a child really scream that ******* loud when you're on the phone. Oh yes, and can also automatically wake up when you're going to bed or have a major meeting the next day. 3 O clock this morning, 3 o clock this ******* morning, when I had a 6 O clock start.

I have had a tulip day. Absolutely terrible. 6 O Clock start, turned to a 9.30 start. Had to be in Birmingham, but new I could move it.

Then went to the car, it had a flat. A bloody flat. So 10.30, ready to set off. Head off to Reading, get stuck behind some ***** in a car loader doing 10. Get to reading for 11.30!!! On the way though, notice my phone is working. Well as I am away for a number of days at a trade show and need to book a hotel, I stop off at O2. Two hours later! TWO FREAKING HOURS later, it turns out that these idiots had cut my phone off my accident! ACCIDENT!!! ITS THE SECOND TIME IN TWO MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally I decide to forget the trade show in Brum, knowing that it will take all day and go and phone up HR at the Perm company I had been negotiating with. I had held them off for an extra two weeks as my ex-vp was offering me a role. He failed to deliver that, so I had been negotiating with the perm job. Decided that was the role, got back in touch and it seems that when during the negotiations I had shown a little too much management experience, that they had now questioned their whole hiring policy for the role and wanted to re-org. But they could only do this when their GM got back from the US, and so they had been told to tell me to rescind the offer, so it didnt stuff up my chances with the contract I was holding back.

FFS! I LANDED UP WITH NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll tell you what the fourth M is. It's ******* MURDER!!!!!!!!!!!!

        What a s h i t e day!!!!!!!!!!

You know what they say about assumptions!

When I have days like this I decide that I am trying too hard.

The days when I do nothing, everything seems to sort itself out (like a client phoning out of the blue and virtually offering me a well paid, local contract).

Sorry to tell you this, but the 4th M is Maintenance...

              Hi MF,

sorry to hear you had a bad day.

To be honest, it sounds like you need a holiday.

Take the Mrs and baby away for a week or two, somewhere sunny, leave the watch and phone in the hotel/apartment and sit on the beach and make sand castles.....

How is the baby, last I heard was when your mother in law tripped over.

So, mate, have a break, have a rest, things aren't so bad, but it appears from what you write that if you keep going like this it will become a self perpetuating cycle

              you need a break

              me too :-)

              all the best

              Milan.

Which place has the best opportunities for punching the PM (was it the PM, can't remember now?)

Re: 3rd M. Yes, I seem to remember being intelligent and motivated. These days, am lucky to string a coherent sentence together.

Just to add a bit of balance it's not always sweetness on the Perm side

Where I work has been reduced, in less than a year, from 20 to 10 to 5 people. Two of those never come to the office, so it has all the atmosphere of a tomb. One person is left doing all the development work and maintenance (it's a software company) so stuff is queuing up .. the bookkeeper and the MD have regular screaming matches with each other (mainly about creditors), and I had to do some sneaky contract work just to ensure I'd have some money if the company went bust in Jan/Feb.. the financial situation is still unclear and my boss optimistically things there is a 50% chance the company will survive till April.

If you go perm, make sure you work somewhere with prospects!

i gotta say folks, for the benefit of those who do not know MF.

I joined this forum in 2000, and MF was here before me.

He used to be the most mercenary of contractors, 3 months here 3 months there, walking out if things weren't to his wishes,

but it appears, by this thread,

                    'Perm vs Contract? You decide'

that MF's mercenary genes have been anaesthetised by the three m's

                    M

                    M

                    M

if you don't know what the three m's are and how they anaesthetise a man's mercenary streak then let me explain (as my father did to me and my brothers some years ago).....

the three m's, the motivated man's anaesthetic.....

                    marriage

                    mortgage

                    maternity

once a man has those three m's he becomes anaesthetised

as we see here in the example of MF formerly the definition of a contractor's contractor

                    Milan.

                      Permi vs contractor

I was a happy contractor in the financial sector and have done almost 2 and half years in the same bank. at the middle of 2007 they offered (too good to refuse) me the permi role and I took the position (thought about pension, holiday, carreer, sickie!!!!). In less than 2 years, that position made redundant and I was on the road at April 2009, one of the worse time to get any job. I was so sick that I have traded 2 years of my contract money for what ??? When companies get rid of you they do it anyway. Now after 3 months of bench time I was back to contracting and vowed never to go permi.
