Perm vs Contract? You decide

I think this illusion persists today in many contractors .......... yeah Im free, Im my own boss, I set the agenda.

No you don't. For most people, you still go to work at 9, leave at 6 and still get handed stuff from the boss to do.

There are very few jobs on jobserve that say 'Come in whenever you want, set your own hours, dictate to the team your vision of the companies vision .......'

Dunno about that, I tend to work from home when I feel like it (as long as the clients IT infrastucture supports home working of course)
Start/finish when I like including lunch breaks

When I fancy a lie in and roll into the office at 10.30 all I expect and all I have ever got from "the boss" is a "good morning". (OK, when it's after 11am then a sarcastic "good afternoon" is acceptable)

However, I'm almost exclusively a project worker, I don't do day-to-day tasks. For me if you're doing the same bug fixing and support crap everyday then why bother contracting. I also value face to face communication over telephone/email/IM. A lot more can get done a lot quicker when everyone is in the same room.

My working practices have never been dictated to me, nor have I ever had to work under someone else technical. Likewise timescales are not dictated to me, they come to me to agree a development and testing timescale which can be incorporated into the project.

Take the perm job, and do what most permies do - get a bunch of us real men (and laydies) in to do the work whilst you bicker about the new coffee machines

i gotta say folks, for the benefit of those who do not know MF.

I joined this forum in 2000, and MF was here before me.

He used to be the most mercenary of contractors, 3 months here 3 months there, walking out if things weren't to his wishes,

i guess theoretically, after the foundation three m's there could be all sorts of kinds of m's, and philosophically one could assume that as a rule of thumb, the more m's a man has to his name, the less chance he has of materialistic financial dreams
