Having a life is one thing but something is surely wrong when those living in subsidised housing (and possibly on benefits or tax credits) are shelling out two grand-ish on plasma tellies. What sort of message is that sending out? Remember the Rochdale Swamp Donkey? I think we worked out her "family" were on the equivalent of over £75K. Hey kids, no need to work, sit on your fat lazy arses and the idiots who actually work will look after you. New plasma telly sir? No problem, we'll get one sent right over. New XBox 360 for the little 'uns for Crimbo? No problem madam, we'll stick a bit more on you giro this month. What sort of fcuked up world is it where those who dare to buck the system and work are punished so the lazy and illiterate can prosper? Where criminals are let out early, regardless of risk, just so a bleeding hearted social worker can feel good about himself.
Welcome to Tony and Gordons wonderful New Britain. You can shove it up your arse Benno, the sooner we get rid of this shower of sh1te the better.
Because people like Benno firmly beileve in the social welfare trap (condemning the poor to a life of low aspirations, poor housing, no jobs, poor education and welfare dependency) this evil system is patronised by those in power.
This mentality of "OK so we'll keep the undesirable in the ghettos and not allow them a life." is designed to ease the consciences of people like benno when it is precisely people like him who condemn these people to the ghettos in the first place. When these ghettos are exposed as being as unpleasant as they are, the like of Benno think that chucking them a plasma screen is somehow going to ease the problem.

That's a pretty big assumption to be making I'm thinking. Just cause it's a coucil house doesn't mean the occupiers haven't bought it (My muum's bought hers, as have a fair amount of the neighbours), or that if someone is living in a council house and legally working then they're not paying rent of some kind - they should be kicked out for getting a job? You lot are never happy. If they choose to spend the rest of their money on something else (Like a big telly) why is that cause to get all bent out of shape?
My best mates dad has lived in a council house his whole life, why? Because he's severely disabled - his one joy in life is television and he was always the first to have the latest thing (Video, SKY, plasma whatever), maybe that was too leniant and he should have been stuck all day in his wheelchair thanking his lucky stars he wasn't out on the streets begging ...Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith

No problem.
I've got no problems with helping people put a roof over their head and food in their belly. The point I'm making is those who obviosly can afford it should not use it at the expense of those who cannot,.
It's got feck all to do with socialismComment

You're all making the assumption that because someone lives in a council estate they are on benefits and scrounging off the system.
The original post says that the plasma tv box was in a communal bin, so can someone please explain how you come to the conclusion that the owner is a scrounger?
On the one hand you're all thanking the thatcher government for allowing people to better themselves by buying their own council houses, and on the other you're dismissing all council house/flat dwellers as a bunch of scroungers.
The double standards on this board never fail to amuse me.

Please tell me how you can be so sure that the owner of the plasma TV in this case hasn't worked and paid for it himself? I'm not the one making short sighted assumptions.Comment

I have exactly the same issues with scroungers as the rest of you. I'm just a little more tolerant of people who genuinely hit hard times.Comment

This leads me to believe that the State isn't the answer; as I've mentioned before, there's too much transfer of responsibility from the self to the State.Comment
