Scroungers
I hate scroungers. It’s all about helping the deserving poor, and not helping the undeserving poor. But how do you differentiate?
I’m past caring now anyway. The country wanted Labour and that’s what they have. As long as I’m alright Jack, keep them in their poverty.

This argument about council housing highlights one reason why it shouldn't exist. Benefits should be paid in cash with an allowance to pay for private housing included. To be fair, a while ago I saw that the government had brought in a pilot program under which they were doing this.
In future political authorities should not be allowed to own or control residential property, except in the very specialised circumstance of it being tied to a job.
Similarly the concept of "low-cost" housing is economic nonsense. It is usually short-hand for subsidised housing. If there are people who you think need it, give them more money in the form of benefits, or higher salaries if they are working.

Woo, a simple post about EU trade tariffs and a new telly and we get three pages of heated argument on social equality and the housing market!
I love this place

You're right, I was jumping to conclusions. He probably just nicked it.

Those who buy a property also tend to value it more. You can often tell those apartments that have been bought as they also look like they have been kept in good condition. I've seen this on many a council estate. In the block served by that communal bin room not one flat within it looks as if it has been looked after.
It is also of sufficiently long distance not to have come from our block of apartments and ours are privately owned - although some are rented out.
Have to say that on an individual basis it would be hard to say this with any degree of certainty but neither are there a shortage of expensive and new cars.

This leads me to believe that the State isn't the answer; as I've mentioned before, there's too much transfer of responsibility from the self to the State.

On the one hand you're all thanking the thatcher government for allowing people to better themselves by buying their own council houses, and on the other you're dismissing all council house/flat dwellers as a bunch of scroungers.
The double standards on this board never fail to amuse me.
Hypocrits one and all

Because people like Benno firmly beileve in the social welfare trap (condemning the poor to a life of low aspirations, poor housing, no jobs, poor education and welfare dependency) this evil system is patronised by those in power.
This mentality of "OK so we'll keep the undesirable in the ghettos and not allow them a life." is designed to ease the consciences of people like benno when it is precisely people like him who condemn these people to the ghettos in the first place. When these ghettos are exposed as being as unpleasant as they are, the like of Benno think that chucking them a plasma screen is somehow going to ease the problem.
I thought we had chucked all the socialists off this site
Please tell me how you can be so sure that the owner of the plasma TV in this case hasn't worked and paid for it himself? I'm not the one making short sighted assumptions.

No problem.
I've got no problems with helping people put a roof over their head and food in their belly. The point I'm making is those who obviosly can afford it should not use it at the expense of those who cannot,.
It's got feck all to do with socialism

My best mates dad has lived in a council house his whole life, why? Because he's severely disabled - his one joy in life is television and he was always the first to have the latest thing (Video, SKY, plasma whatever), maybe that was too leniant and he should have been stuck all day in his wheelchair thanking his lucky stars he wasn't out on the streets begging ...

Having a life is one thing but something is surely wrong when those living in subsidised housing (and possibly on benefits or tax credits) are shelling out two grand-ish on plasma tellies. What sort of message is that sending out? Remember the Rochdale Swamp Donkey? I think we worked out her "family" were on the equivalent of over £75K. Hey kids, no need to work, sit on your fat lazy arses and the idiots who actually work will look after you. New plasma telly sir? No problem, we'll get one sent right over. New XBox 360 for the little 'uns for Crimbo? No problem madam, we'll stick a bit more on you giro this month. What sort of fcuked up world is it where those who dare to buck the system and work are punished so the lazy and illiterate can prosper? Where criminals are let out early, regardless of risk, just so a bleeding hearted social worker can feel good about himself.
Welcome to Tony and Gordons wonderful New Britain. You can shove it up your arse Benno, the sooner we get rid of this shower of sh1te the better.
