Time to by that big LCD screen you've been eying up

The EU plans to impose a 14 per cent import duty on imports of larger LCD screens, leading pundits to forecast a huge hike in sticker prices.

    The Register

DVI LCD screens over 19" are going to get an EU wide 14% import duty on non-EU produced kit. Getting your home Media Center kit sorted sooner rather than later would be a good idea.

I must have done something wrong. I could n't begin to afford a Plasma TV but in the bin area for the Council Estate what did I spy Huge great box from a Plasma TV (Phillips). This in Hackney which is supposed to be one of the poorest boroughs in the UK. Are they joking when the Coucil Estate residents can afford Plasma TV's!

Funnily enough in my block I've never seen a box like that in the bin room. We have old fashioned CRT thingy's.

So because someone lives on a council estate you're assuming they don't work and therefore aren't allowed to buy a new TV?

Differentials between private (> £100 per/w) and public (< £100 per/w) renting are large in London - so even a differential of just £50 per week leaves you with £1000 after 20 weeks.

No. I'm saying council estates should be for those who cannot afford a home. If they can pay over £1000 for a TV then they are obviously not that desperate.

When people like Teachers, and Nurses cannot afford a house is it right that council flats are taken up by those who are capable of buying their own home. Some of Prescott's so called affordable homes just came on the market and the mortgage you would need to buy it (and don't forget you pay rent on top of that) is ouside the reach of most teachers and nurses.

It's cheaper to import labour because they will rent. Natives have this wild aspiration that going out to work will allow them to become property owners. Needless to say natives move out of property hotspots leaving the transient population to do the work. Obviously the kids respond well to a new teacher every three months don't they? Patients are obviously well looked after by the Punjabi doctor and the Philippine nurse communicating in broken English ("wass at 15mg or 50mg of morphine Sir?")

But never mind about all that, it's all about bums on seats, targets and league tables.

OK so we'll keep the undesirable in the ghettos and not allow them a life.

                  No problem.

Having a life is one thing but something is surely wrong when those living in subsidised housing (and possibly on benefits or tax credits) are shelling out two grand-ish on plasma tellies. What sort of message is that sending out? Remember the Rochdale Swamp Donkey? I think we worked out her "family" were on the equivalent of over £75K. Hey kids, no need to work, sit on your fat lazy arses and the idiots who actually work will look after you. New plasma telly sir? No problem, we'll get one sent right over. New XBox 360 for the little 'uns for Crimbo? No problem madam, we'll stick a bit more on you giro this month. What sort of fcuked up world is it where those who dare to buck the system and work are punished so the lazy and illiterate can prosper? Where criminals are let out early, regardless of risk, just so a bleeding hearted social worker can feel good about himself.
Welcome to Tony and Gordons wonderful New Britain. You can shove it up your arse Benno, the sooner we get rid of this shower of sh1te the better.
