The correct term for 0845 pre-fixed numbers is 'Lo-Call', hence the confusion with local. The cost of the call varies depending on who your call provider is, ie: BT, NTL, OneTel, Cable and Wireless.

    You get the picture.

And Scaroth is correct, the owner of the number gets a kickback from the service provider. Plus they are always excluded from your bundled minutes, monthly packages, non-BT tariffs and so on. That's (one of) the reasons why Ofcom are clamping down on them - the punter doesn't know what the call will cost as if they're on anything other than the crappy BT rip off standard tariff it will not cost the same as a local call, it will cost more. I hate these 0845/0870 numbers - when it's a sales line or a complaints line, that's cheeky to say the least.

Companies using 0845/0870 numbers are supposed to provide a regular geo number for people calling from abroad. It usually takes little effort to find that number and call that instead.

Sorry, but have to disagree slightly. The cost of making an outbound call to an 0845 'Lo-Call' number is determined by your telephony provider. If they can't tell you the pence per minute rate, how can they determine your phone bill.

It is also true that the owner of a 'Lo-Call' number receives a percentage of the income it generates, and I don't like that much either.
