Although be aware that as it's an 0845 number you will be paying a premium rate and the company concerned will be getting a kickback from the service provider. How nice it is to make your clients pay for the priviledge of letting you sell them something.

        0845

Actually the 0845 number is charged at a local rate, so that every contractor NO MATTER WHERE they are in the country pays a local rate, not a PREMIUM rate has you have quite incorrectly stated.

It is just like calling your next door neighbour.

We think about all contractors whether they are based in London or Newcastle.

May I just take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to let everyone know that, I am sure they will all be very grateful to you.

        Good Day

My company has an 0870 number. It's the one I give to agencies when they want to chat for ages on the phone. Kerr Ching.

so DP how much do you make? Do you get a % of every call made to that number, for each second or minute? Or is it per call? How does it work?

Don't get too excited Ms Loos.

O870 is not premium rate it's national rate (which means it costs the caller something like 10p per min).

I get about 1 or 2p of that, the rest goes to the the middleman and the telephone companies.

Still, it's the thought that I'm spending the agencies money that counts.

                  quite
and even then 10-20% of the call cost isn't too bad. Now you just need to somehow get them to call you lots

Well I do think Mr Sharp made a good point there. Wouldn't want to let his refutation of a false slur go unremarked.

Sorry, but that guff about 0845 numbers is just wrong. Ofcom are seriously concerned about them (and 0870 numbers which cost more), particularly the description of them as "local rate" (which they are not), the fact that you do not know in advance what the call will cost you per minute, plus the kickback that the number operator gets (typically 0.5p/min). Ofcom are proposing to reduce the charge for 0845 numbers to a maximum of 4p/min and to abolish the operator kickback. Numbers in the 087 range will have to be described as premium rate and will be capped at 8p/min maximum (exception: the 0871 range will remain at 10p/min).

Unless you are on some sort of crazy 20 year old BT tariff, a call to an 0845 number will always cost you more than a call to a regular geographic number, no matter where in the UK you're calling from. In my mind, anything that costs more than a regular landline call is a premium rate.

At the end of the day, these guys are making money out of you calling their sales line.

Anyway, it ain't keeping me awake at night and I'm sure it won't you either.
