Actually I've found that you don't need to kiss ass to climb up the ladder - all you need is to genuinely not give a sh!te because you don't really need the job. Then you tend to treat the very senior people without deference. And because you do that they assume you must be senior too and make it so.

tecnical - functional - planning - support - whatever. if you run a ltd co you are a director and should run your business as you see fit. a plan that includes expanding skills is wise but make sure that the path is based upon what you and your business need rather than vague perceptions of a resource hierarchy.
