Some developers can't really hack it. They probably weren't very good in the first place, and by the time they get to 40 more and more people have sussed them out. Therefore they try to move into management, where lack of ability is more readily accepted, or at least not so easily detected: it can take years for poor management to bring a company down, but only microseconds for bad code to bring a computer down.

Meanwhile, the good developers are prized for the exceptional levels of competence that only years of experience can bring

      Never seen developers be appreciated.
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

In a way time changes developers too. I mean a developer over 40 would not produce thousands of lines of codes like a 20-something developer would. It would leave the big chunks of repetitive code to less senior developer and perform the most critical pieces. Also what I think increases with the age is the ability to find severe bugs in the code with much more ease and have a better overall view of it. But in all I think both senior and junior programmers are needed (with senior meant in an old fashioned computer way reserved to the 30+ ys geeky experience, not in the modern job-agencies negligence as anyone with +2 years experience of anything).
I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

Whatever, I can't do anything else so a developer I will stay. I'll be working in B&Q when the time comes.

I doubt you'll land up in B&Q. You need a personality for that. More like MaccyD's.

What a strange thread. It should have been titled:

"Woe is me! Nobody suffers more than I do!"

Now shut up, the lot of you, and get on with your work before Bob S. comes in and catches us mucking about and sacks the lot of us.
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.
