Never a truer word spoken. Half the PM's Ive encountered are just there for the laugh and the power trip. They couldnt manage a pi$$ up in a brewery.

If he can terminate you as a routine matter because you don't do as he wants in this respect, then he is your boss.Originally posted by minestrone View PostI act in exactly the same way as if they had hired someone from a consultancy. I see myself as there to help them while they are paying money, not to work for them. Nobody is my line manager. If they start getting all "you were late today" or "we need you to do more hours" I just ignore it.

If OTOH you really do just ignore it, your company's contract may be terminated, but he is someone who works for a customer, not your boss.

Like IR35, it depends not just on what you say but on what you do.Step outside posh boyComment

LOL. As Project Manager, we're not God. We're your God! Remember that. You get assigned to projects and a PM can just as quickly get you unassigned. So yes, work late especially if your lack of technical skills and chatting with colleagues has put the project behind, and try and help out. No project manager likes a 9-5'er, oh and have a can do attitude. Nothing worse than a lazy developer who says 'it can be done'Originally posted by wurzel View PostWhen I get a particularly pompous one I like to remind him or her that they are there partly to work for me so that I can do my job - so all those things that need setting up like access permissions etc that have to go through all the right channels, well I make sure my PM shares some of that tedium.

Most of them are knobs and couldn't manage the proverbial in a brewery.

 Developers are an unhappy lot.

Developers never want to be developers, they want to move up. They want to move across. They want to be Business Analysts, Technical Architects, Project Managers etc.

Who has ever heard of an old developer? Once you hit forty, if you're still developing then you just haven't developed as an individual and you're going to find yourself on the scrap heap pretty fast and posting on bulletin boards. At least you are safe mate - doing some numbers in Excel does not count as developing.Originally posted by MarillionFan View PostWho has ever heard of an old developer? I've never worked for/with/against a PM that could get me unassigned. I've always worked for a more senior manager. The PM is just somebody that sits in the corner of meetings, or sometimes wanders over and says "how's it going?"Originally posted by MarillionFan View PostLOL. As Project Manager, we're not God.
