Venice accommodation

Nope not new year, but then again stowmarket is busy on new year.

Went last year in June, was planning night in Venice but it was dead after the daytrippers had left, went back to Treviso and it was kicking.

But that's what I loved about Venice, the romance of wondering through the narrow alleyways at night without the crowds.

One tip though, we ordered a bottle of house wine that we assumed would be in keeping with the prices on the food menu but ended up costing as much as the 2 course meal for the both of us.

I agree, infact we got there at 6:15 am and watched the Sun Come up over the Lagoon, magical. All I was trying to say it that it is cheaper, more friendly to stay out of the city at night in Treviso.

Same thing happened to me in Rome, Two pizzas at 5E each, bottle of house wine - 20E and 5E cover charge.

We did 4 nights in Rome and 3 in Venice with a 1st class train in-between, I was unsure if I had done things the right way round but in hindsight I wish we had 5 nights in Rome and 2 in Venice.

I'm glad we did Venice but Rome blew me away.

During the summer all the more expensive resteraunts on St Marc's have live music playing untill around midnight, classical chamber orchestra's, traditional itialien chamber muusic etc etc all playing outdoors in front of their respective establishment. All competeing with each other to attract the punters. You dont need to sit down at a table, just wander from stage to stage or sit in the square and listen.

Venice is not a party city, it's a sitting in a bar, having a few glasses of wine and some snacks, talking or watching the world go by city.

Staying on the Lido is another options. Cheaper than the city and the vaporetto ride accross the lagoon in the mornings is a nice relaxing start to the day.

I can heartily recommend the take away pizza place on the main strip opposite the vaporetto stop. By the slice or whole pizza's and better than any we had in the city. The bars along the main road are also better than the city versions. Cheaper, friendlier livelier.

Oh that takes me back!
19 years old, me and my Italian friend, a bottle of champagne and seeing in the new year in St Marks square, then sleeping in the station waiting for the first train back to Parma the next day.

when I went we stayed at the Holiday Inn out of town and got the train into Venice every day. Their trains were all double-decker jobbies and cost about €5, plus the station was right next to the hotel

It was a short taxi ride away from the airport and beats having to drag your luggage around the streets of Venice.

Only a short stroll to St Marks or Rialto. Takes a bit longer in a mask and cape
