    What about:

. move into a Park Home estate in the UK, there are some very nice ones

    or

. move into a Park Home estate in Spain/Portugal, there are some very nices ones - and you will have English neighbours and not some Johnny Foreigner

so that will reduce your accomodation costs, without living in a hole, and if you move to Spain / Portugal you will have the weather etc

    then....

your mortgage, rent that house out, and get the mortgage covered by the tennants, this will lay you some kind of financial nest egg for when you are 83 assuming that the mortgage is 25 years
Milan, as usual, where to start?

Not being in the UK is part of the point. I don't like it here, I have been away for 30 years, except for 2 periods when I came back to be with a desired partner. Yes, I see what I have done wrong there and I won't do it again.

Having English neighbours is not on the list of desiderata. I'm not being rude here folks, he made me say it. Having English neighbours is OK but not necessary, and I'm not sure that Iberia retirees would be high on my list of choices.

The mortgage is 10 years (that's why the amount is painful). Would you take on a mortgage that you'd be paying at 82? If you're not going to pay it off by retirement, or even end of life, you might as well rent.

Your last point is a good one, but I can look at myself and my life to date and know that I can live with myself, but I care about where I live. I have lived in 6 countries outside the UK, including 2 continents other than Europe, so it's not just a grumble, I know what I want.

OTOH since, as some have kindly reminded me, I don't have much time left anyway. So perhaps a good plan would be to spend time where I want, on tourist visas. 6 months every year working in Europe and living in a caravan; the other 6 months every year in NZ on a tourist visa? Better that than 12 months every year here!
For guys of your age with no future then I suggest Switzerland for the cost of a flight and a night or two in a private hospital.- all you need

          Tarkers,

what are you worried about then ?

you have a short mortgage - 10 years

          you have language skillz

you are not worried about being in a british expat enclave

you are a contractor and marketable

          ok, now we're farming.....

1, move to France, zillions of great locations to choose from, Dordogne, Normandy, Provence etc

2, Buy a modest place somewhere

3, Be located within accessible distance of an airport - therefore keeping your European contracting opportunities open

4, rent out the UK house to cover the mortgage

5, buy yourselves a nice convertible car for some fun

live nicely, eat and drink well, continue contracting and let the renters pay the uk mortgage

          sorteeeeeeeeeeeeeeed

          howzat ?

Escape the UK and its low-income low-quality life.

              WHS +++.
And now the country has racked up this huge debt, things are going to get drastically worse.
There is really no point being here any more particularly if you have kids - they are destined to be squeezed until the pips squeak.
I am seriously investigating Singapore at the moment.

There seems to be a theme developing that suggests everyone's Utopian idea of living revolves around living as far away as possible from anyone else. Is this a case of IT contractors conforming to stereotype?

Have you un-brainwashed yourself DA now that the facts are thrown into stark clarity? The UK never had a superior economy to Europe - that was just the propaganda the political elite sold you and which you swallowed.

Like Tarquin said, the cake is too small now and without drastic measures no party can fix it.
