but where are you commuting from and to, and why ?

From S England (because my partner lives there and has family and job ties) to Paris ATM (because I can't find work in the UK).

Is that all that upsets you?

1. Daily Mail - this has no impact on my day to day life
2. Clarkson - I don't watch his shows or read his columns, or live near enough to him to risk bumping in to him
3. CUK posters - c'mon, they're funny
4. PC - I have some relatives who live in parts of the world that are not "PC" and the tulipe that they spout is truly shocking
5. Reality TV - don't watch it, there's plenty of choice. The choice of TV available in Britain is really rather good compared to other places

I would stay put if I were you.

EDIT: I would be more worried about the mountain of debt the country is running up along with the future state and public sector pension costs that nobody has explained where the funding is coming from and the ever increasing public health expectations that the NHS cannot afford.

When I was working in The Forest 10 years ago (!), some chappie had decided to up sticks () and bugger off to NZ.

I think at the time I was still too old or didn't have enough points or something.

Anyway, with elderly dependents it's out of the question.

Ho hum.

And no matter how far you go, you still can't get away from yourself.

NZ is great if you are in Auckland or you are a complete sports/outdoor nut AND you are happy to have zero earning potential but a great quality of life.

If you want lots of cash/culture then forget about it.....

it sounds like, unless you do a little expectations management re-adjustment, then you are going to have an unhappy existence.

What about:

. move into a Park Home estate in the UK, there are some very nice ones

or

. move into a Park Home estate in Spain/Portugal, there are some very nices ones - and you will have English neighbours and not some Johnny Foreigner

so that will reduce your accomodation costs, without living in a hole, and if you move to Spain / Portugal you will have the weather etc

then....

your mortgage, rent that house out, and get the mortgage covered by the tennants, this will lay you some kind of financial nest egg for when you are 83 assuming that the mortgage is 25 years


from Spain / Portugal your partner will be able to have English friends, and if you pick a location within reasonable distance of an airport then you will still be able to contract in France or wherever you have contracts, let's say anywhere in Europe within a 2 hour flight of Spain / Portugal


the consequence of this plan will be:

. you live in Spain / Portugal - in reduced cost accomodation

. if you so wish you can engage with your English neíghbours over there

. you will rent out the mortgage house in england and that will build a nest egg

. you will continue contracting and bringing home the bacon


voila :-)


and to compensate yourselves for living in the Park Home, not that I have anything against them, get yourselves a nice set of wheels, a 3 series convertible or something - very nice, or an MGC whatever your preference is

It's "up to 55" (i.e. inclusive). Australia is "under 45". Canada does not formally have a limit, but points for age drop to zero by 5I think) 53, at which point you will need the points from fluent English and French to pass. Heureusement ça ne présenterait aucun problème dans mon cas.

Your last point is a good one, but I can look at myself and my life to date and know that I can live with myself, but I care about where I live. I have lived in 6 countries outside the UK, including 2 continents other than Europe, so it's not just a grumble, I know what I want.

OTOH since, as some have kindly reminded me, I don't have much time left anyway. So perhaps a good plan would be to spend time where I want, on tourist visas. 6 months every year working in Europe and living in a caravan; the other 6 months every year in NZ on a tourist visa? Better that than 12 months every year here!

If your mortgage is paid off, you can do that here and now.
Most peoples biggest payment is their mortgage/rent.

Get rid of your housing costs and you can have a much more creative life.

Only up to a point, if inflation kicks in. Within just a few years of paying off their mortgage, my parents' rates and water rates were more than their mortgage costs had ever been.
