          There are plenty of other tennis tournaments taking place around the world and it would be a shame if Wimbledon became less attractive as a result of some top players deciding not compete, especially now the powers that be have finally accepted that putting on a roof is a good idea because it might rain in London during June.

          People overseas are not nearly as attached to our "summer institutions" as we are and I think it is a mistake to rely on sentimentality to maintain the competition's position in the world.

          There is a bright side of course - if all those foreign players stay away then we may at last get a British winner.
