There are plenty of other tennis tournaments taking place around the world and it would be a shame if Wimbledon became less attractive as a result of some top players deciding not compete, especially now the powers that be have finally accepted that putting on a roof is a good idea because it might rain in London during June.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostBTW I'm pretty sure Wimbledon won't happen anywhere outside the UK.
People overseas are not nearly as attached to our "summer institutions" as we are and I think it is a mistake to rely on sentimentality to maintain the competition's position in the world.
There is a bright side of course - if all those foreign players stay away then we may at last get a British winner.

9 billion but that was three years ago. Probably more now.Originally posted by SizeZero View PostNot sure why Britain wants any more major events in the next decade - does anyone know what the final bill to the taxpayer is for the Olympics yet?
World cup football would pay for itself.

If the country consisted only of London, there wouldn't be 5 mln living there. They would have starved to death. Think about it.Originally posted by AtW View PostIf this country only consisted of just London with say 5 mln living there then the City could have provided everyone, but it can't support whole country.

God, how does this government manage to wreck literally everything it touches?
They're like that cloud of nanobots in the "Day the Earth Stood Still" remake I downloaded an excellent pirate copy of yesterday - Everything they crawl over instantly turns to dust and ashes.

That will pay a fraction of debt and will almost certainly cost money - if big starts don't come to UK events then ticket sales will be lower, hotels occupancy etc etc.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostI don't know if anyone has noticed but we are in a big pile of tulip debt and it has to be paid somehow.

Yeah why should these multi-millionaire sports stars pay tax... we should pay more instead.
I don't know if anyone has noticed but we are in a big pile of tulip debt and it has to be paid somehow.

Consequently the best thing that can happen to this country is disappearance of the City. The only banks that should stay there are those who do retail banking and investment into UK itself - some money can go abroad to support UK businesses that do exports there, and some banks can support foreign direct investment into this country - meaning investment that creates proper jobs, real exports etc.
This would remove illusions about getting big money from nothing and country will need to focus on things it did well in the past - diversified things, not just one baloon full of hot air that will blow in your face at the worst possible time.

No. Although I believe some of this is slippery re-interpretation of existing laws.Originally posted by AtW View PostI find it suprising such cases are taxed in the first place. Then again maybe I should not be suprised. Did Conservatives have anything like this in place?

Soon it wont just be the sports stars. It will be the city too. This country will just be full of chavs on their free laptops soon.
