    Are you still are permie?

No appreciation, that goes with the job. Money = appreciation. I don’t expect “well done” emails. When you are a contractor; expect the permie who has been off sick for six months to take credit for your project.
Complex work. The word complex means irresolvable, some tasks are. Complicated work can be difficult. I like both.
Lots of Competition. Not if your are in a niche market. You are only 26 years old, you can not expect to be an expert in IT until you have more experience.
Indians pricing us out of the Market. Yes they do, but what have you done about it? I have been lobbying MPs about this for 10 years, longer than you have been in IT.
No Jobs, get a plan B and keep re-training.
No Money . I see 65 year olds earning extra money in Tesco and Aldi £8.50 per hour.
Broke. I am sure that I owe more money than you.

There are very few legal people with even a passing knowledge of IT.
There are a lot of IT lawyers and barristers out there. Their time is spend dealing with contract law not the niche of technical stuff. And with all professionals some are better than others.

Also patent lawyers. Not too many of them with niche knowledge either.

From the people I met over Xmas I discovered that even though there are plenty of lawyers who are interested in getting into the area it's very hard to get into because clients are directed to only a few firms. So obviously you are going to have to work for one of these firms particularly if you want to go solo after a few years.

Oh and if you are going to retrain as a lawyer of any kind just be prepared to do a lot more work than now.......

One thing in IT is that you can still get work if you refuse to work all and nearly every Saturday and Sunday for a client. There are lots of other professions and careers where you don't have this choice particularly when you are training.

I am indeed still permie but the more I apply for contracts the more I see it as being just as bad as permie. Got a two offers in the last 3 months but just not worth it. It all sucks if you ask me.

Does anybody know what the state of the IT market is like in Canada/USA? I know they pay people enough to survive on as compared to here.

Just had a quick Google, and it looks worse than here

Think it's been offshored, or onshore-offshored to India/Indians.

IT is currently in a really bad way in the US. Lots of people without work. They're coping with the recession and the competition from abroad too.

If you want to stick with IT then I'd suggest looking at jobs in China. A booming economy and lots of work. Pay is lower but so is the cost of living. I guess the same could be said for India but I don't know the market out there very well.

Why don't you get out of the north west? It's grim up there, apparently.

Looks like there really is no escape from poverty at the moment... or relative poverty at least.
