Actually Labour's best policy would be to let the Tories win and take all the flak for the upcoming austerity. Then win the election after that, when everyone's peed off with being even worse off.

That's what is going to happen. The Tories big mistake was not letting Neil Kinnock win the election. If John Major had lost that one, then the Tories would have undoubtedly won in 1997 and we'd have not had the Bliar years. Shame really.
