If the people here that are so keen to want to shoot to kill someone who wants to steal their PVR, one can only imagine what they would want to do to someone who does something more serious. Ranging from being mugged/bottling to something unspeakable. There doesn't seem to be much preventing some people from killing and valuing life cheaply.

Bad Move. If a burglar doesn't already carry a gun when he breaks in somewhere (luckily in most cases he doesn't) then he certainly will if this law gets passed. Why do we insist on following the mistakes the US makes?

If the perpetrator knew the possible consequence before committing the crime it is they who values their own life cheaply.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

Ok, let's say burglar carries a gun and will use it if home owner fires on him. Let's say it will be 50-50 that burgler will be shot down, and equally for home owner.

This means that given such probabilities burgler will have 90% chance of being shot dead after 3rd time he gets into it.

Since burglars are in great minority it means that they'd be shot dead pretty quickly, at least those of them who are stupid.

Muggings will also be much harder even if they threaten you with a gun - you can give money and if they walk away you can open fire, the COST of the crime will be much higher to those scumbags than a warm place in jail.

Some of home owners will make mistake, some innocent accidents, and some could be malicious - this is inevitable but pretty quickly people will learn, those who don't will be shot.

There isn't a death penalty for trespass or stealing. If, in some psychotic world, that were the penalty, it would make existing penalties for more serious crimes ludicrous.
