Just happily accepted a 6 month renewal. However, during the conversation it was mentioned that they would like to make this a permie position at the end of the 6 months.....I told them they couldn't afford me

So they'll probably be looking to offload you early and find someone they can
I've got to agree with diver, thats the sort of comment you make when the 6 months are up.
That way the chances are they won't have a replacement in mind so you'll get another 6 months.
Foot, shot, yourself.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
SR, the secret is to say, okay, let's do this 6 monther and then sort out a permie position here at the end.
Then stay quiet. Chances are they will forget until your 6 months is up, in which case you say "too late to sort out now, let's do another 6 month contract and sort it out at the end of that."
