In both area's you shouldn't be short of choice. They also have enough local shops, cinema's, restaurants, bars etc... for you not to have to bother going into the center if you don't want to.

The one thing which takes some time to get used to though is the prevalance of the high rise apartment buildings all looking almost identicle.
    Cheers SC.

1st day tomorrow of house/apt hunting, got an agent and 7 places lined up for viewing. Seen em on the internet, but it's never the same.

Quiet. And that's why they pay foreign contractors like yourself a lot of money?

Fck knows to be honest. I think the truth of it is that if I was me, but born here and local (Chinese, malay, indian etc) I'd get paid a lot less than I'll get paid for being western. Not that I'm complaining.

And to play devils advocate partially, I think culturally people in this part of the world can be very clever, and can be very good at following process but once it comes to independent thinking, or when things go a bit off piste then maybe they're bnot as good.

Well done Snaw, keep the stories coming, it sounds fantastic.
Dont forget to eat your five fruits a day though, they are pretty hot on that over there. A mate of mine hired a cheap filipino maid and it turned out she was spying for the authorities, a couple of times he only ate four of his daily portions and he was hauled in to explain why he didnt support the program.
The next time it happened , they gave him two weeks in Changi gaol, removing the kernels from rice grains with a needle.

              be careful out there.

Don't sell yourself (or them) short. You're being paid extra because you're bringing in certain experience and/or knowledge which they can't source locally.
The days of westerners being paid more just for being westerners is long over and they have a deep culture of not wasting money. If something is not making a profit then its not worth having.

Which probably explains why the country isn't mired in debt
